The Human Interaction Project (H.I.P) is rooted in the belief that travel facilitates individual, local, and global change. Recipients will receive the trip of a lifetime: foreign immersion combined with volunteering and self-growth. Up to 5 college-age students a year will be given a travel experience in partnership with the international volunteering and learning organization UBelong. The Human Interaction Project (H.I.P) will cover airfare, housing, UBelong program fees, medical insurance, and some incidentals. Most importantly, the scholarship is based on the principles of giving, receiving, and changing. When you give to others, you receive the gifts of connection and selflessness, which in turn change you and inspire you to continue giving and changing. Each student will be able to award a gift of up to $3,000 to an individual or organization that they encounter on their journey. This act of generosity will change both the giver and receiver and their respective communities. Scholarship participants will receive training in leadership and philanthropy so that they can make the most of their travel and philanthropic experiences. Upon returning, students will be expected to share the stories and take-aways from their journey with those in their community and beyond through blogging, videos, and speeches. Duration of fellowship: 10 days to 2 weeks; Amount of award: $10,000 per scholarship; .$2,500 for airfare; .$500 incidentals (food, in-country travel and sight-seeing, medical insurance); .Philanthropic gift up to $3,000; .administrative fees; Selection Criteria and Process: Our key attributes that we are seeking: a concern for fellow man (we don't want students who are just looking to fill up a resume with volunteer/international development experience); hunger for self-growth (not students who just want to have a really fun spring break); maturity; curiousity; openness to foreign cultures; independence. Application elements: .Cover sheet with personal details; .essay that answers the questions: What do philanthropy and kindness mean to you? (How have they played a role in your life?) What do you hope to gain personally from a travel-philanthropy experience? What places and causes are meaningful to you? The essay should also indicate what time frame student would like to travel. .2 letters of recommendation. After committee has reviewed applications, compelling applicants will be selected for a Skype interview. Program Execution; Once selected, students will be referred to Jenny for travel planning. Jenny will purchase international airfare, but students will be responsible for in-country travel planning. Jenny will aid student in planning in-country experiences and linkages with hosts, charities, organizations. Leon should be involved as much as he wishes in this process. Jenny will arrange for transfer of gift funds from to the individual/organization selected by the student. Student will document experiences either live or for broadcast once he/she returns to the US. Students should be prepared to write blog posts, social media blurbs, and speak on video about experiences.
