Description of Mark
The mark consists of the ?literal? element ?The Music Playce?. However, surrounded by these literal elements are 2 sections of 5 lines which in music notation are called a staff. The large ornate ?G? to the left is called a G clef also a part of music notation. This designated the pitch assignment to the various lines and spaces in the staff. The ?2 4? represents two beats per measure with a quarter note getting one beat. Also a part of music notation. The ?MP? (not MI) stands for mezzo piano which is Italian for ?medium soft volume? used in music notation. The ?FF? to the right of the E in Playce stands for fortissimo, also Italian for ?very loud? in music notation. The ?MF? (not ML) stands for mezzo forte, Italian for ?medium loud? also a part of music notation. The 2 long horizontal ?V? shapes on either side of the word ?Playce? suggest that there is an increase in volume before the ?P? in Playce and a decrease in volume after the ?E?. The music notes that are written, of which there are 5, indicate a resolving interval called a tri-tone. In the key of C this would be the notes B and F which are on the left side of the literal element ?The Music Playce?. The note F is then held with a line called a legato or slur line meaning that the note is not attacked again by the player. Under the F on the right side of the literal element ?The Music Playce? there is a mark which might appear to be a ?7?. However it is actually a half note rest used in music notation. The 2 notes, one on top of the other, are both eighth notes. E and C which is the musical resolution of the tri-tone. In the history of music, this interval called the tri-tone had to be resolved in this manner for centuries. Composers who worked for the church could be ex-communicated from the church if the tri-tone was not handled this way. Hence the expression ?the devil in music? was often the term used for the tri-tone. The mark above the E and C is called a ?fermata?. This indicates that the notes are to be prolonged beyond their notated duration. Included in this graphic are 2 double vertical lines, one being fatter than the other both with 2 dots on the inside respectively. These indicate the musical phrase must be repeated.
